Wax Crafting For Fun

Crafting for Fun

My first wax class was given at a scrap booking store. I had a show for an Art Walk hosted at that location and all the clients saw the wax designs and wanted to learn how to do it so they could use the designs created in their scrap booking ventures. This is where I said "sure I teach wax crafting classes" and set off to discover new things to teach. I wanted to find fun things to show them so I let my mind start to wander to see what I could come up with to show. First thing I did was to crumple up typing paper and then smooth it out. I touched the tops of the wrinkles with the iron and colored wax. This would leave valleys untouched by the wax. Then I took some acrylic paint and thinned it down to paint like watercolor. I added in some glass beads (the small ones used in painting) and watched the paint slide off the wax and stay in the valleys. Next I selected various large paper punches that had petal shapes in descending sizes. I punched out the paper and formed flowers with this material with the patterns nested in each other. I attached them to each other with some of those raised sticky pads and gave them a them a new idea for scrap booking. This also promoted sales of these paper punches at the store. I always tried to find products in the store to use for crafting class ideas. .

The more you have fun with this media the more your mind will try to find new ways to express itself. A great idea is to put some transparent wax on the surface and then create an interesting background with yellow and browns using a nice light touch. Now put some dots of different color around on the card and use a hot air source to heat the wax and make it move outwards into abstract flower patterns. You can also use this method to great advantage on your skies to create cloud like effects. I like to use it for just a touch sometimes on a painting to create a certain look you can't get any other way. Crafting in wax will get your mind spinning with new and different ways to work in this medium. Want to see how someone let his mind soar?
