Ancient Encaustic Art Form
Ancient Art Contemporary Expression
Encaustic, which means to burn in, is a very ancient art form. The Egyptians were doing it 2,000 years ago and would you believe the paintings are as vivid today as the day they were done. I have seen one of these encaustic Fayum paintings in
Victoria, BC when the Egyptian exhibit was open. They are beautiful. They used a small brush dipped into a bowl of wax heated by a flame underneath. You can search the web to see a collection of these paintings and they are worth the look. Here is a copy of what they look like. They were done to cover the coffins and to represent the departed. You will appreciate them even more after you put your hand to painting with wax.

Now as I have mentioned there is a wide appeal to this style of encaustic painting which is very popular in Europe. If you have an interest in seeing a large collection of encaustic pictures painted by present day artists, and also want a place to post your own creations, you can go to Encaustic.com. The gallery has been moved to a separate location but you will be forwarded from Michael Bossoms site to the Encaustic International site. Michael Bossom did so much to spread the word about this art method.
